Abdellatif Kechiche’s rapturously beautiful Palme d’Or winner “Blue Is The Warmest Color” is a gift for which we should all be grateful, and it’s streaming on Netflix Instant right now. Criterion has also released a bare-bones Blu-ray of the film, with a more robust release, replete with extras, due out later this year. At three hours, the lesbian romance almost never wastes a moment of its relaxed running time — except, of course, for the highly stylized, gravity-defying sex scenes that you can now fast forward through, or pause on, if you wish. The film about young Adele’s Adele Exarchopoulos coming-of-age, which brings her out of the closet and into a feverish love affair with enigmatic painter Emma Lea Seydoux, possesses a lived-in quality you don’t see much in contemporary movies, even in the arthouse. While queer cinema has all but lost the heat in its loins thanks to political advancement in the gay community — and Criticwire’s Sam Adams argues this point cogently in his essay “Have the Victories of Gay Rights Dimmed the Fires of Queer Cinema?” — we have Kechiche to thank for this wonderful movie that celebrates gay love and sex in all its messiness and truth, and without all the genre’s bland coming-out trappings. Even if his direction is a bit navel/male-gazey for some tastes, it’s impossible to deny the siren pull of Kechiche’s women, particularly Exarchopoulos, who racked up critics’ prize after critics’ prize last Fall. In terms of Oscar voting, the film fell on deaf ears or blind eyes and was shut out. But “Blue Is The Warmest Color” is eternal. Super Reviewer Oct 11, 2014 A young girl falls for another woman. Adele Exarchopoulos's face is one of the most expressive I've seen on an actress in a very long time. She has the capability of rendering an entire film's worth of character motivation and contradiction in a single close-up, and her leading lady, Lea Seydoux, is a fitting and remarkable performances in Blue Is the Warmest Color are the highlights of the film, and to watch this acting master class is a thrill in and of itself. The story isn't much to write about. A woman tries men, falls for a woman, the relationship encounters difficulty, the end. It's all as one might predict, but that doesn't mean that the variances of individuality don't give the film a vitality and spark that is absent from many modern-day romances. Overall, good acting is sometimes enough to make a good film. Super Reviewer Sep 29, 2014 Blue is the Warmest Color triumphantly revealed love in the extremes, both in its beauty and in its monstrosity. It was powerful and gripping in its honesty and fearlessness. Super Reviewer Sep 10, 2014 There are immeasurable reasons this French romance drama film has received a great deal of critical acclaim. One can look to the themes expressed in the film, such as prejudices, social class, self-discovery, and the emotional turmoil of a relationship-particularly when it is your first. Others can look to the gorgeous cinematography and artistry of the film, filled with dense metaphors-and yes, of course blue is heavily symbolic. Yet, what makes Blue is the Warmest Color so heartfelt is its delicate sense of realism and truthfulness. It is the tale of Adele's first love for another girl, Emma, and the progression of their relationship over several years. Their relationship evolves with beautiful tenderness, sexual passion, and ultimately, the tumultuousness that comes with true love. Is it a poignantly masterful film that deserves to be watched by all, whether part of the LGBT community or not. Super Reviewer

This movie triggered me thinking about love and life and I waited to give it my neutral review. I am watching movies since the latest 30 years and I have to say ; This movie is special !! After 30 years of seeing all kind of movies I have narrowed my scope of movies to see. They have to be special, show me something different, give me ideas to think about or to evaluate in my own life. So, movies like World war Z is not directly my style. This movie although is one of the best love stories I have seen. No unnecessary emotional or cuteness parts, each part of the story is real and genius. It is the soft moments of a love story, the hard moments bringing to the screen. The movie is made in away you are in the skin of Adele and Emma can't remember the actress names . They take you with them in their love story, their feelings. That is also the reason that the 3 hours of the movie is not too long at all. I was surprised it took 3 hours when the film ended. The movie handles the passion between them, a passion that many of us forget over the years in a relation. That passion is also expressed in about 3 sex scenes, 3 scenes which are quiet honest and direct. Some people will find these scenes too long one of them could take 10 minutes , but I find it necessary to establish your follow up of the passion they have between each other, so that when things goes worse you also are one with the movie, natural, honest about love, life and sexuality could be attended by children of 12 and more, if they are explained things of life they also can see all kind of war movies … . Many will say "Oh, lesbian movie, what the hell you are". This is a movie for all of us, independent of your orientation being gay, hetero, bisexual, … It is a Love feeling, being angry / disappointment / sad / etc …, can be seen on the faces of Adele and Emma and by this I have to say that these actresses are just superb, in fact I don't know another word to say extraordinary acting. It has certainly been very difficult for them to make this film. The director Bravo to are some scenes which are just fantastic The first meeting between them, the encounter between them in the lesbian bar in which Adele is in a strange world as adolescent. The tree scene, where they actually get in love both of them. The level of a good love story with all it's feelings and situations has been raised to a higher one. Who can ever do this the last remark. The film treats the love story, it's personal problems, the passion, but does not handle the problems which can have their family or friends, not in now, go and watch it !kriddirkNov 8, 2013FAQ2Contribute to this pageSuggest an edit or add missing contentWhat is the streaming release date of Blue Is the Warmest Colour 2013 in Canada?AnswerEdit pageMore to exploreRecently viewedYou have no recently viewed pages
